What is Veterinary Physiotherapy

Treatments aim to restore balance to the musculoskeletal system, improve function, and enhance quality of life.

Veterinary physiotherapy is a holistic, non-invasive approach that works with the body’s natural healing mechanisms. It addresses joints, muscles, and soft tissues to improve movement, relieve discomfort, and support long-term wellbeing. Most animals accept treatment readily, and sessions are designed to be calm, comfortable, and tailored to each individual.

Treatment may include hands-on techniques such as massage, joint mobilisations, and stretching, as well as guided exercise programmes to encourage strength, flexibility, and balance. By working with the body’s natural healing responses, physiotherapy supports both short-term recovery and long-term wellbeing.

What is Massage Therapy

Massage involves the manipulation of the body’s soft tissues, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. To relieve stiffness, reduce pain, and encourage relaxation. Using a range of techniques, from gentle to deeper pressure, massage can improve circulation, ease muscle tension, and enhance mental as well as physical wellbeing.

Tailored to each animal, massage is highly effective in the prevention of injury, the management of existing conditions, and as part of ongoing routine care.

Owner Involvement

Physiotherapy often includes guidance for owners, such as exercises, stretches, and lifestyle adjustments to support recovery and maintain long-term wellbeing. This collaborative approach ensures the best results and strengthens the bond between you and your animal.

Physiotherapy is suitable for animals of all ages and abilities, and may be recommended for:

  • Post-surgical recovery (e.g., ligament or fracture repair)

  • Neurological conditions (e.g., IVDD, nerve injuries)

  • Musculoskeletal problems (arthritis, hip/elbow dysplasia, back pain)

  • Sporting or working animals to maintain performance and prevent injury

  • Older animals to support mobility and comfort

  • Preventative care to maintain long-term wellbeing

What happens during sessions

Part 1: Assessment

  1. Patient information: The first appointment will take a bit longer as I need to get to know you and your animal. I will start off asking about the daily routine, lifestyle, and surroundings before conducting a comprehensive physical evaluation

  2. Gait Analysis: Looking at how they move, walking, trotting, circles and more

  3. Palpation: Muscle palpation and Joint range of motion assessment

Part 2: Treatment

  1. Treatment: Massage Therapy, these hands-on techniques encompass a variety of methods, including massage, joint mobilisations, myofascial release and Advance Stretching. Electrotherapies are also used when needed to aid in the up regulation of the cells

  2. Exercise advice and recommendations
